I’m looking at my top five books read last year and four of them are written by women. Yass!
Seriously though, I’ve had a terrible year for reading, mostly because my freelance business is going well. I’ve also made a conscious effort to write more short stories and start submitting.
These are the books that have stood out to me in 2019:
5. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Du Maurier is one of my favourite authors. I also love House on the Strand and My Cousin Rachel.
4. The Price of Time by Tim Tigner
This is a thrilling psychological page-turner about how far people would go to stop time.
What would you do if you had all the money in the world? And all the time?
3. The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton
This is an intricate tale, the sort I love, spanning different timelines and world events. Why does a house look familiar to a girl who has never seen it before? A Gothic tale with a huge cast of characters.
2. The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
I thought this was a poignant read, delving into the secrets of the regime. It explains a little how people are broken down and controlled and has parallels in today’s world.
1. Educated by Tara Westover
I found this book inspiring and eye-opening. The author is candid about her insular upbringing in a fundamentalist Mormon community.
