Anyone who knows me knows that I am slightly obsessed by all things Outlander (or Cross Stitch as the books were called here). In fact, the detail and mood of the writing inspired me to write in the first place.
I have read a lot of novels trying to find the high of Diana Gabaldon’s books. People admire different things about the series, so I have recommended books based on different aspects. What is it you like most about the books?
What can I read after Outlander?
If you like a good steamy historical series…
Ross Poldark by Winston Graham
Fabulous series set in Cornwall of the 18th century.
Into the Wilderness series by Sara Donati
An American frontiersman takes an Englishwoman to live in the remote mountains of 18th century New York.
If you like gritty historical detail…
The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
This book follows a historian who is sent back to observe the black plague in England. A great read.
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
This was my top read of 2017. This book, set in the early 20th century, poses the question: What if you could live your life again and again, until you get it right?
If you like intense stories of families…
The Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean M Auel
A vivid tale imagining the life of a woman among the cave man peoples.
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
An intense but very worthwhile read about a young girl trapped in her parents’ passionate and dangerous relationship in rugged Alaska.
The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
An American father moves with his daughters to a tiny remote community in the Atlantic and comes to terms with his past.
If you like kick-ass females…
The Amelia Peabody mysteries by Elizabeth Peters
This is a wonderful series of nineteen mysteries following a feisty British lady who travels from England to study Egyptian archeological digs in the 19th century.
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
A story of spy women in Nazi-occupied France during World War Two. A story which makes you think about all the ways to be brave.
If you like witty cads of the 18th century …
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue
This is a YA book filled with unrequited lust between two young males, adventuring in 18th century France.
If you like Scottish settings…
Corrag by Susan Fletcher
A novel of a woman thought to be a witch, covering the Glencoe massacre of 1692 and Jacobite rebellion.
If you just like Jamie Fraser…
Finding Fraser by K C Dyer
This book is a really fun fanfiction book about a modern-day girl who goes to Scotland, obsessed with finding her own kilted Jamie.

Further Reading:
Diana Gabaldon herself put out some recommendations for her readers who were dying for Outlander on her website. It is called the Methadone List.
Here is a useful Goodreads list, voted by readers, called Recommendations for Outlander Withdrawal.
Great list!
Thanks! How many have you read?
I haven’t read any of these, but I would like to red Life After Life at some point. I also was looking at some of the other books.
Great suggestions, thanks!
Thanks for reading. Hope you can read some of these. ☺
Great list to check out. The Life After Life book sounds similar to a book titled Replay. I’ve read a lot by Elizabeth Peters, who also writes as Barbara Michaels. Love her stories. Another good one is Marlys Millhiser.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check her out 🤗
