Favourite Winter Read

My favourite winter read would be The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. It’s a coming of age story of a girl, stuck in her parents’ turbulent relationship. The whole book leads toward winter in Alaska in the 1970’s, foreshadowing the trapped and dark days to come. It is not a very festive book though, on the whole.

I just watched The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix with my family, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. It’s best for kids from six years up.

The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson has always been a favorite for me. My mother used to read it to me when I was little. I loved the adventure of Kay as she travelled trying to find Kai. The reindeer girl is my favorite character. Such a great children’s story. While I like Frozen, and I know that is Disney’s version, it is NOT even CLOSE to the original story.

Oh, since I didn’t use this for the Christmas question… I’d say Visions of Sugar Plums by Janet Evanovich. I listen to it every year. I loved how Janet had brought Diesel(from the Charmed series) into the Stephanie Plum series. Tho, I was mad at him for hitting on Stephanie when he’s supposed to be with Lizzy. But it’s a fun and fast read. Stephanie is a bounty hunter and she is supposed to apprehend a guy named Sandy Claus who happens to have a toy store. He hires “elfs” and mayhem happens. Lol.

I’m a sucker for all things Grinch so I’m going for How The Grinch Stole Christmas for my favourite Winter read. I read it multiple times every Christmas and watch the Grinch with Jim Carrey every year. It is the perfect festive story were a grouchy green man learns the true meaning of Christmas, Dr Seuss is the champion of learning real life lessons in a fun poetic way.

My favourite winter read is T’was the Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore. When I was little it was a family tradition to read it every Christmas Eve with the whole family. I do this with my own kids now too.

I have almost too many books to choose from, there is something about Winter that always finds me revisiting books I have enjoyed. Like Jo our family also reads T’was the Night Before Christmas every Christmas Eve as it is such a perfect tale for settling excitable children on their favourite evening of the year. Since my youngest was little though, I have loved to read Bear Snores On to the kids through the winter months. The book is written by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman and has that wonderfully lyrical rhyming quality to the text accompanied by the sweetest drawings. It is a firm family favourite and one I hope the children will give me the pleasure of reading for a few more years.
