Writers should be paid for their work – whether it is through competitions or submitting to literary magazines. This is my updated list of flash and short story competitions open to international submissions for 2019. The competitions are listed in time order of the deadline.
It is worthwhile for emerging writers to enter these competitions to practice writing to deadlines and rules, tighten their prose and hopefully get their name out there. I am based in New Zealand and it is difficult to find these opportunities in a small country. That is why I decided to summarize the international short story and flash fiction competitions that people from around the world can enter.

Flash Fiction Competitions:
The main difference between short stories and flash fiction is word count. Flash generally falls between 500-1000 words but some can be less or more. It is a self-contained, punchy story that describes a moment or series of moments. Its style falls halfway between prose and poetry, evoking a feeling of something other than what is written, by word choice and also by what is left out. Flash is not a condensed short story, a chapter of a novel or a poem. Its plot should be introduced with a great hook and completely resolved by the end.
Reading a lot of flash fiction is a really great way to learn what it is and how to craft it. I really enjoy writing flash – it is a great challenge condensing the big themes into such a small framework.
