Day 1

This is an excerpt from a poem called Digging by Seamus Heaney.

It is about a writer sitting in his office reflecting on his family’s heritage of working the land. He gets past thoughts of shame at his profession . He realizez he can do justice to them by digging into their pasts with his pen and writing their histories.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.

I foynd this poem while looking for quotes about writing history and have been thinking about the imagery of digging a lot.

I nominate (if they would like to participate):

Note: I published this already but it has since disappeared so I’m sending it out to the world again.
